Tribute to Tom

This is the text of a tribute to my Dad written by his sisters Mary Goode and Pat McNutt, which Marshall read at the memorial service.

Our brother, Tom, was very interested in baseball. This came from the Eichman side of the family. His grandfather, Dad and uncles all played baseball. We grew up going to baseball games and listening, along with our Dad, to baseball games on the radio. Tom’s favorite team as a child was the Cleveland Indians. He had a large collection of baseball cards. He knew the batting average of many players on many teams. His team became the Baltimore Orioles when he moved to the Baltimore area. He had season tickets to their games and when Peter became old enough, they both enjoyed them.

Tom was also very interested in writing and research and wrote many articles that were published. He was very detailed in his work and through his research his writings were very accurate. Tom also did a lot of genealogy work on our Mother’s family, the Whitneys. He took our Mom on a trip to Vermont to research the Whitney family and subsequently wrote the history of our Great Grandpa David Daniel Whitney. He also included our Mother’s research in addition to his research for the publication. It was greatly received by many of the relatives and will be treasured for generations. Tom came by it naturally as our mother was very interested in writing—especially poetry. She also had her writings published. We would like to share 2 poems that our mother wrote. May it be a tribute to our brother.
